Electricity
CIE EMERGENCY NUMBER (electricity) : 179
Electricity in the country is managed by Côte d’Ivoire Electricité (CIE). The country uses the two-pin circuits and the voltage is 220-240v.
If you have appliances using the British type three prong plug, you can still use them in Abidjan, although you will need to bring plug adapters from your three-pins to their two-pins (Europlug type).
If you have appliances using the North American 2 or 3 prong plug, you must check the voltage allowance on the tag. North American appliances run on 100 - 127V which are not compatible with the voltage here and can run the risk of starting a fire. However, many appliances nowadays (including computers) are made with Dual Voltage capabilities. If the tag states that it is Dual Voltage (100-120/220-240v) then it will work with only a plug adapter. Otherwise, you will need a voltage converter.
Electricity bills are paid every two months at any of the CIE offices, at any BIAO-CI Bank Branches, or using Mobile Money services.
In order to subscribe for electricity as a first the following documents are needed:
- A form of identification such as a passport or a national identity card.
- A connection invoice that should be fully paid, normally by the landlord.
- A conformity certificate for installation, which is issued by the Laboratory of Building and Public works and is obtained after filling in the CIE form.
- A signed and certified lease agreement or a sales contract.
In cases where there is transfer from one user to another using the same meter, the following documents are required:
- A form of identification such as a passport or a national identity card.
- A signed and certified lease agreement or a sales contract.
- A meter reading which should have been taken and agreed upon with the former tenant.
- A copy of the landlord’s identity card.
